BIO:

Barbara Ritter, Dean of the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration, joined the CCU faculty in 2004. Her scholarly specialties are in organizational leadership, justice and business ethics. She is the program chair and upcoming president of the Management Education and Development Division of the Academy of Management and is on the board of the Academy’s Teaching Theme Committee.  Barbara is on the editorial board of the Organization Management Journal and serves regularly as an advisor for the Organizational Behavior Teaching Society.  She was named the 2010 Outstanding Chapter Adviser for the business honor society, Beta Gamma Sigma and was the adviser for CCU’s chapter for many years.  During her time as chapter adviser, BGS received the Outstanding Chapter Silver Award.  Barbara volunteers locally for the Salvation Army and has often incorporated service learning experiences into her classes.  Her MBA class in the spring of 2013 raised over $50,000 for local not-for-profit organizations. Prior to becoming dean, Ritter served as interim dean (June 2013 – February 2015), and as the department chair for Management and Decision Sciences in the Wall College. Ritter earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in industrial and organizational psychology from the University of Akron.

  • Led departments through a strategic planning process to better understand mission, and how mission is linked to the university strategic plan as well as to daily activities of staff.

The Wall College of Business has approximately 2,000 undergraduate students across six degree programs and 100 graduate (MBA and MAcc) students with over 8,000 alumni around the world. Over 80 faculty (84 FTE) and 20 staff support the college.  The Dean is responsible for all aspects of college operations, including The Grant Center for Real Estate and Economic Development, The Clay Brittain Jr. Center for Resort Tourism, Each One Teach One Program, the Wall Fellows Program, the Community and Business Engagement Institute, and the Wall Center for Excellence and the Professional Golf Management Program.  Several of my notable accomplishments as Dean can be found below.

Strategic Planning and Execution

  • Led strategic planning process, including a review of vision, mission and related outcomes.
  • Coordinated a broad-based discussion of supporting strategies for each objective in the strategic plan, including all stakeholder groups.
  • Led a revision of the college values and ethics statements.
  • Restructured organizational structure and leadership team in the college.
  • Created a Community and Business Engagement Institute to allow for talented students to interact directly with the community in consulting projects.
  • Created a separate Department of Accounting.
  • Broke the Wall Center for Excellence into two divisions, the Wall Center for Advising and the Wall Center for Career Services.
  • Initiated the online MBA and several concentration areas, including Healthcare Administration, Commercial and Investment Real Estate, and Not-for-Profit Management.
  • Worked with faculty on a variety of curriculum initiatives to differentiate the college both inside and outside of the classroom.

Talent Management

  • Crafted and led top management team, including Associate and Assistant Deans, Department Chairs, and Directors.
  • Responsible for attracting and retaining quality faculty.
  • Recruited and hired 31 new faculty members.
  • Created and enacted a mentorship program for new faculty.
  • Recruited and oversaw a diverse group of faculty, 40% of whom are female and 18% that represent underrepresented minority groups.
  • Worked collaboratively with faculty to increase quantity and quality of intellectual contribution requirement.
  • Realigned funds to reward new scholarly requirements.
  • Crafted a culture of care based on shared values.

Fiscal Management, Fundraising, and External Relations

  • Responsible for budgeting of internal and external funds, a total of over 12 million dollars.
  • Worked with Office for Philanthropy to secure gift and gift agreements.
  • Generated over 5 million dollars in combined gifts, bringing in three of the largest pledged donations in the college’s history.
  • Increased Board of Visitor membership by eight members with a focus on diversity and alumni membership.
  • Increased Board engagement by creating subcommittees and a mentorship program.
  • Increased Board contributions by approximately 20% over 2013 giving rates.
  • Worked with the Office of Philanthropy to strategically focus giving opportunities.
  • Unveiled a new Donor wall to recognize philanthropic support.
  • Assisted the library in the Friends of the Library kickoff campaign.
  • Planned a 20th year anniversary fundraising campaign for the Wall Fellows, which generated a matching gift agreement.

Curriculum Management and Student Experience

  • MBA program recognized in US News and World Report for placement rate and representation of unrepresented minorities.
  • Moved forward online curriculum initiatives, including an online MBA with a concentration in Healthcare Administration, an online BSBA completion degree in Marketing, and in Hospitality and Resort Tourism.
  • Established a minor in Commercial and Investment Real Estate and Applied Creativity and Innovation linked to an external certification in Innovation Engineering.
  • Created a career readiness plan for students implemented through the Wall Center for Excellence.
  • Implemented the Student Executive Leaders program, to extend career preparation opportunities to a greater proportion of the student body.
  • Worked together with faculty to focus on soft skills throughout the curriculum, resulting in notable increases in ratings from exiting students, internship providers, and placements.
  • Brought together a team of faculty to integrate the freshman level classes across the freshman year with experiential components that spanned sections and semesters.
  • Instituted an Experiential Learning Day for freshman.
  • Incorporated internship experiences into all major areas and increased internship opportunities, resulting in an increase in non-required internship participation of 345% from 2012-2017.
  • Increased both Freshmen class size and retention rates in the college.

Over 60 faculty and 20 staff support the college.  The Dean is responsible for all aspects of college operations, including The Center for Community and Economic Development, The Clay Brittain Jr. Center for Resort Tourism, Each 1 Teach 1 Program, the Wall Fellows Program, and the Wall Center for Excellence.  Several of my notable accomplishments as Interim Dean can be found below.

Strategic Planning and Execution

  • Led review of mission and related outcomes and strategies, coordinating with internal and external constituents.
  • Aligned infrastructure and resources with strategic objectives.
  • Created a separate Department of Accounting as a first step toward a School of Accountancy.
  • Facilitated the creation of Memorandum of Understanding(s) with the local two-year college.
  • Planned and implemented with the faculty several online completion and certificate programs.

Under my direction, the Management and Decision Sciences Department in the Wall College of Business had approximately 700-800 majors and 16 faculty members.  Several notable accomplishments accomplished during my tenure as Department Chair are below.

Department Initiatives

  • Grew the program from one general management degree to six concentrations.
  • Increased applications to the program by approximately 30%.
  • Increased student credit hour production by 34% over three academic years.
  • Worked with faculty to revise the existing management core curriculum in order to best meet student needs in the current business environment.
  • Replaced two existing core courses with two new and innovative experiential courses.
  • Collaborated on a daily basis with the faculty to meet the goals of the department.
  • Collaborated on a daily basis with internal and external university constituents to best meet the goals of the department.
  • Managed the departmental travel budget.
  • Hired five new faculty and lecturer slotted positions.

College-wide Initiatives

  • Initiated the Faculty Development Dinner series for the College of Business, coordinating with the College of Humanities and Fine Arts.
  • Coordinated Wall Connections, a day-long conference for students that was re-conceptualized to include student presentations.
  • Designed and implemented the Express BSBA Degree in Three and Get More in Four combined degree program.

  • Worked with committee members to formulate a system and carry out the actual measurement and reporting of the SLO data.

Continuous Improvement

  • Chaired a summer taskforce that provided recommendations regarding continuous improvement initiatives to the faculty.
  • Collected data to create a curriculum map to ensure LGs were being taught in the curriculum.
  • Created an Assurance of Learning manual and made it available online.
  • Facilitated the introduction of CBAD 120: Introduction to the Global Culture of Business, as part of Business foundation courses.
  • Facilitated the introduction of CBAD 373: Business Integration and Application as part of Business core courses.
  • Facilitated the introduction of 12 required Professional Development Activities (PDA’s) prior to graduation.
  • Led the taskforce to recommend a minimum GPA requirement for students to gain entry into the college and passed it through the Academic Affairs process.
